Tuscola’s swimmers dove into the waters Wednesday, Nov. 17, to open the winter swim season against Franklin High School at the Haywood Regional Fitness Center.
“It was a great first meet of the season. There were some impressive individual and team results,” said Kevin FitzGerald, Tuscola’s head swim coach.
There were 23 races on the docket and the final results showed that Franklin prevailed in both the girls and boys team results. Tuscola’s girls were just edged out by six points, 132 to 126. The Mountaineers’ boys fell by a score of 156 to 90.
Tuscola’s Dylan Lunsik was a standout with firstplace finishes in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15 and the 100 fly in 57.38.
Trinity Wenzel also notched two first-place finishes with victories in the 500 free in 6:13 and the 100 back with a time of 1:07.
“Both Dylan and Trinity achieved automatic qualifying times for the upcoming NCHSAA 3A Regionals in Charlotte on February 3-5,” FitzGerald said.
Since Pisgah only has one swimmer competing this year, FitzGerald is also serving as the Pisgah swim coach. Luke Gonzales, a Pisgah student, competed individually at the meet and also posted automatic qualifying times.
Gonzales finished first in both the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 23.67 and 54.01.
Tuscola’s girls 200 free relay team also nabbed first place after finishing in 2:04. Abigail Jones, Eva Rinker, Emily Ferguson and Hannah Wells contributed to the effort.
Notable second-place finishes for Tuscola include the girls 200 medley relay with Jones, Ella Laursen, Wells and Ferguson teaming up to swim a 2:16.
Tuscola’s girls 400 free relay squad earned second place with Savannah Jones, Luci Snyder-Lower, Melinda Oswald and Gracie Rinker doing the work to finish in 5:52.
Tuscola’s boys 200 medley relay team also earned second place with Andrew DelBene, Teagan Laursen, Lunsik and John McCrory finishing in 2:01. The same foursome placed second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:47.
