The Tuscola Mountaineers girls golf team won the 2021 Mountain Seven 3A conference championship, wrapping up the tournament Wednesday, Oct. 13. The Mountaineers routed second-place West Henderson by 61 strokes, totaling 559 points to West Henderson’s 620. Tuscola freshman McKenna Williams won Conference Player of the Year honors.

Because of inclement weather, the tournament was condensed to three days. The first two days included one round of nine holes and the third day included two nine-hole rounds. Days one and two were played at Etowah Valley Golf Club and Maggie Valley Golf and Country Club, respectively. The tournament returned to Etowah Valley on day three for two nine-hole rounds to determine the champions.

Williams, Darla Forester, Laken Williams, Emma Arrington and Sakari Morgan make up Tuscola’s championship-winning squad.

Williams, a star freshman, and Forester, a junior leader, led the way for the Mountaineers.

Williams’ scores for the four championship rounds were 45, 44, 41 and a final round of 40, totaling 170.

Forester totaled 48, 54, 53 and 58 for a total of 210 over the four rounds, earning All-Conference honors for her efforts.

Williams and Forester advanced as individuals to the NCHSAA 3A west regional championship on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at Glen Oaks Golf Club in Maiden, North Carolina.

The Mountaineers did not advance to the regional competition as a team since three players needed to average scores of 55 or better in order to qualify.
