The 2019 Haywood County Senior Games and SilverArts concluded recently with an awards banquet at the Canton Armory.

Three weeks of non-stop events ended with a night of celebration and dozens of door prizes. Performers Bill Wilson, Kay Gapas, Nan Smith and Betty Henderson all showcased their talent and provided wonderful entertainment for the crowd during the performing arts show.

During the banquet, the Willis Spirit of the Games Award winners are also announced. The Spirit award goes to the male and female participant who competed in the most events. The 2019 winners were Ruth Elson who competed in 29 events, and Ken Taylor who competed in 27 events.

The 2019 Haywood County Senior Games included the addition of 29 new participants. Medals are awarded to first, second and third place winners in each age division for athletics and by subcategory for literary and visual arts.

Participants who placed are qualified to compete in the NC State Senior Games held September-October in the Raleigh area.

The Senior Games is not only an event for athletes, but for artists as well. Local artists have the opportunity to submit their work which is judged and then displayed in a public area. The art show was held at the Creative Arts building at Haywood Community College. This year, the SilverArts program grew by nearly 50 percent.
