Winter view of Purchase Knob

PURCHASE KNOB — A winter view from Purchase Knob, a destination in the Cataloochee Divide hike that’s part of this month’s line-up from Haywood Rec.

We’re not into the thick of winter yet, making it the perfect time to enjoy the pros of winter hiking — long-range views thanks to fallen leaves — without the cons of bitter cold.

Haywood County Recreation has two guided hikes in December, offering a chance to connect with fellow hikers and explore new trails with experienced local guides. The cost is $10 per hike. To reserve a spot, call 828-452-6789 or email ian.smith@haywoodcountync.gov.

Dec. 1: A 4-mile hike along the Cataloochee Divide trail from Purchase Knob to Cove Creek. This is the fourth and final installment of a series traversing the Cataloochee Divide, which follows the ridgeline above Jonathan Creek on the border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This segment is considered moderate. Led by Jamie and Ruffin Shackleford.

Dec. 15: A 7-mile hike along the Mountains to Sea Trail and the Green Knob Trail. Rated as a difficult hike. Led by Phyllis Woolen and Vickie Watson.
