The Christmas tree adorning the lawn of the U.S. Capitol this year will be chosen from a national forest here in North Carolina, and the public is invited to help make the 4,000 ornaments needed to decorate the tree.
The Cradle of Forestry is offering free admission July 23 and 24 to anyone who makes a homemade ornament to send to D.C. The free admission days are being held in conjunction with “Christmas in July” festivities at the Cradle, including Santa, caroling and ornament decorating.
“This is a chance for us to bring the amazing aspects of our home town and forests to a wider audience on a national level,” said Beth Hooper with FIND Outdoors, the nonprofit that operates the Cradle of Forestry.
The handmade ornaments should represent North Carolina’s natural and cultural heritage and incorporate the theme “From the Mountains to the Sea.”
The Cradle of Forestry is an outdoor interpretive site with walking paths, a nature center, cultural heritage displays and exhibits. Located four miles south of the Blue Ridge Parkway on U.S. 276 in Transylvania County.
