Book sale chairman thanks supporters
To the editor:
The book sale committee of the Friends of the Haywood County Library would like to express our gratitude to all who ensured that the 2019 book sale was another huge success and a record breaker. This could not have been possible without all of you and your support.
We love having the same patrons return and shop during the sale – some several times a day. We had friends locally, neighboring counties and across the state (Shelby, Charlotte, and Concord to mention a few). Other friends came from Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and South Carolina. The committee was very appreciative for the kind remarks about how well our book sale is organized and run. A very special thank you to those who brought us special treats during the sale.
All the proceeds from the sale go back to your library system so the public will be allowed to enjoy programs for children and adults. Other items will be made available for the library that will not be covered by the county budget or grants. By supporting the book sale – you are keeping your library (all branches) open in Haywood County while other counties are still closing some of theirs.
If you have a collection or an estate and would like to donate the books to our sale, please contact the library. Donations will be accepted again after Oct. 1.
Due to the request of the library director, donations can no longer be accepted at the Fines Creek or Maggie library branches. Please take donations to the library desk of Canton or Waynesville branches. If you are physically unable to or have a large collection, please call the library. The Book Sale Committee will arrange for a pick up.
A few other changes are this coming year. We are no longer able to accept VHS or cassette tapes, electronics, encyclopedias, vinyl records, Chicken Soup for the Soul books, Reader’s Digest condensed books, or magazines.
When you bring in those gently used or new books and other items, please remember to take to the front desk. We ask that you please do not place books in the book drops as this is for library material only. Do not place boxes or bags of donations on the floor by the elevator, outside doors, anywhere in the hallways, or the children’s library. This is for the patron’s safety and the library staff.
A book sale this size just could not take place without many wonderful volunteers. A huge thank you goes to the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department (Deputy Biller and his crew), Ingles, Dave Woody, Junaluska Fire Department, WNC tents, non-committee volunteers who helped set up and clean up packing over 300 boxes of remainder books. Thank you to my “ Boss of Books” Bob, who directed the volunteers in placement of hundreds of boxes of books, dear friends who showed up every day, my energizer bunny Pat, who never slowed down, and my family known as the “Gang.”
Thank you to The Mountaineer (Shelby your pictures and articles were great,) The Smoky Mountain newspaper, the radio and TV stations for their announcements. We also thank the stores, community centers, churches, etc. that let us place a flyer or for your support in other ways. Many staff members who had supported us for years were truly missed.
The Book Sale committee consists of Kent Stewart, Bill Tennett, Jan ande Ross Boyd, Kitty Allen, Dot Barnum, Martin Pensak, Ann LaForest, Loy Lilley, Andy Bartleson, Terry Field, Pat Koonts , Deborah Henderson, Mary Fields and Christina Baxter.
They are special, hard working, volunteers who make this all possible. They are dedicated to our sale and honored to put your donations back in to the hands of those who love books, media, and puzzles. We wish to thank each and every one of you for donating, working, buying and continued support of the book sale. This is indeed a community effort and we feel your appreciation.
I am sad to say that this was my last year. It is time to close this chapter in my life book that I began so many years ago and begin a new chapter. Since taking the chairman position back in 2002, your committee has raised nearly $600,000. We thank you. I thank you. Good bye.
Sandy Denman, Chairwoman Book Sale Committee for the Friends of the Library
