Our friend Richard, of Jonathan Valley, was 17 when he enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He spent those years in the South Pacific theatre, he says, “doing what they told me to do.”

It was a grueling time, but afterwards he came home and went to college, and the GI Bill paid his way. “I was grateful for their help,” he says.
