WAYNESVILLE — William Brent Massie, 92, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021, at Haywood Lodge and Retirement. Brent was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky on Jan. 4, 1929. Brent is the son of the late Tom and Annie Crisp Massie of Waynesville. He is preceded in death also by his older brother Frank. Brent lived in the Grandview community until moving to Haywood Lodge. He graduated from Waynesville Township High School and worked as a sander in his dad’s woodshop, and custodian at Grandview Baptist Church and retired from Haywood Vocational Opportunities with 25 years of service. Brent was a member of Allen’s Creek Baptist Church.
Despite the long-term effects of having polio as a child, Brent lived independently until his 80s. He enjoyed walking to and from Main Street every Saturday to people-watch, and eat lunch at Smith’s Drugstore and then go to Whitman’s Bakery. Brent was very knowledgeable about community history, always reading and a faithful member of his church. He will be missed by many friends.
Services were held Friday, Oct. 15, at Allen’s Creek Baptist Church with visitation at 10 a.m. and the funeral at 11 a.m. Burial followed at Buchanan Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Allen’s Creek Baptist Church 549 Allen’s Creek Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
