CLYDE — William “Bill” Newton Stroup, Jr, 92, passed peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018.
Bill was a native of Haywood County and is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cleida Marie Stroup; his four children, Linda Hyde and husband, Mike, Diane Robinson, Barry Stroup and wife, Debbie, Gregory Stroup and wife, Julie; brothers, Gene Stroup and wife, Fran, Danny Stroup and wife, Georgianna and sisters, Audrey Howell and husband, Phil and Tincy Rickman.
Bill also has seven grandchildren, Rev. Jeremy Hyde, Jason Rogers, Brandon Stroup, Kelly Stroup, Ashley Robinson, Ryan Robinson and Emma Stroup; seven great-grandchildren, Jake Rogers, Carson Rogers, Bryce Boyd, Matthew Bryant, Mark Thayer, Julian Blackmon and Finn Robinson and two great-great-granddaughters, Taylin and Aubree.
Preceding him in death was his father, William Newton Stroup, Sr; mother, Gracie Mae Busby Stroup and sister, Marilyn Stroup Pressley.
Bill was a veteran of World War II and at the age of 19, served as a Seabee in the Naval Construction Force on the island of Guam, where he helped build and maintain the Northwest Field Airforce Base.
He later made a career in law enforcement and retired as a lieutenant with the Sylva Police Department. During his career, he was also a firearms range instructor for several law enforcement agencies and held the difficult to obtain distinguished marksmanship badge.
In his spare time, Bill enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles, but his great love was the outdoors. He was an avid sportsman and spent a great deal of time fishing, hunting and camping. In his later years, he could often be found just sitting outside whittling and enjoying nature.
Bill’s great sense of humor and quick wit made for many joyous times with his family and friends. The colorful stories that he told of his many exploits will be greatly missed.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the Chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Pastor Jeremy Hyde will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow at Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde with military honors. The family will be honoring Bill as his pallbearers.
