CANTON — Thad Bryson Messer, Jr., 83 entered into his heavenly rest while at his residence on Monday, July 1, 2019, after a long valiant battle with multiple myeloma.

Thad was born in Haywood County on May 20, 1936, to the late Thad Sr. and Zora Conard Messer. He was very talented man with an intense love for his God, his family and nature. Thad served honorably in the U.S. Air Force and retired from Champion Paper after 31 years of very faithful service.

In addition to his parents, Thad was preceded in death by a daughter, Lanette Messer Case; sisters, Eula Mae Messer, Lois Rubena Holland, and Mary Ellen Gaddis; and brothers, William Robert and Charles Messer.

Thad is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Edna Cole Messer; daughters Sherri Grant (Danny), Lisa Messer, and Becky Pless (Mark); brother Richard Messer (Judy); sister, Judith Ann Grant (JD); grandchildren, Candace Ledbetter, Matthew Case, Hannah Case, Aaron Grant, Jared Pless, and Gage Pless; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating Thad’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 6, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice.

The family would like to offer a word of thanks to Dr. Barton Paschal and his loving staff for their compassionate care of Thad over the years.
