WAYNESVILLE — Robert Corey Edwards, 60, of Waynesville passed away Dec. 31, 2021, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

Corey was born Oct. 1, 1961, in Bartow, Florida, to the late Lloyd Nelson and Iva Rebecca Hagood Edwards. He was a 1979 graduate of Auburndale High School in Polk County, Florida where he played baseball.

After graduation, he played baseball for Polk Community College in Winter Haven, Florida. He went on to coach Little League baseball with his dad in Wildwood, Florida. He continued to play baseball and softball for many years with local leagues as well as with the Marine Corps. He was an avid motorcyclist as well as an Atlanta Braves fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister.

He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps with nearly 13 years of service. He was also a member of the Army National Guard for almost three years. During his time of service, he was deployed to Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. He also served in Operation Iraqi Freedom where he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat.

Corey was employed with the U.S. Post Office, where he was preparing to retire after 24 year of service. He was described by his customers and coworkers as always having a smile on his face and a cheerful disposition.

Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife of almost 25 years, Lois White Edwards; daughter Amanda Edwards and son Brandon Edwards, both of Florida; son Alan Eugene Elliot, Jr. (Donna) from Auburndale, Florida; granddaughter Brandy Ford; step-grandson Michael Stephens (Jessica); great grandson: Kayden Stephens; sister Robin Lea Royal (Pete); sister-in-law Jo Ann Norton (Stanley); several aunts, uncles and cousins and many friends. He is also survived by his loyal companion and service dog: Diesel.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Jan. 7, 2022, at the Smoky Mountain Chapel with Mac Moody officiating. Military honors will be rendered. The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm prior to the funeral.
