CANTON — Rebecca Lorena Phillips Smathers, a lady greatly loved and a lady that has been an example of kindness and caring for others all of her blessed 74 years of life, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, Nov. 1, 2021.

Lorena was born Feb. 27, 1947, in Haywood County to the late Elbert Phillips and the late Ota Sutton Phillips. She grew up in the White Oak Community and was a member of the last graduating class of Fines Creek High School.

Following her graduation, Lorena made her home in Plott Creek and met the love of her life, Keith Smathers, and they began their journey of a wonderful marriage and life together.

Lorena chose to make her career in the health care profession, having received her associate’s degree in nursing from Haywood Community College. She was faithfully employed for 40 years at the Haywood County Hospital and Haywood Regional Medical Center, working for 30 years in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

Lorena was a lady of strong faith. She was a member of Crestview Baptist Church where she was deeply loved by her church family.

In remembering Lorena we think of her tending her garden and her lovely flowers, always sharing her delicious homemade jams and jellies with friends and family, and her gracious heart of always making everyone feel welcome to their home.

She was an amazing cook and her greatest joy was always making certain that everyone was “full as a tick” when leaving her dining table. Lorena cherished her family and the memories of her will remain in their hearts forever.
