WAYNESVILLE — Josephine P. Wood Green passed away peacefully at Mission Hospital on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, surrounded by her family.

“Jo” was born Jan. 29, 1929, in Canton, North Carolina to the late James Grover Cleveland Paxton and the late Annie Elizabeth Jones Paxton. Josephine will always be remembered as a loving wife and an extraordinary Mother.

She was preceded in death by a beloved daughter, Cynthia Wood Harrington; her first husband, Billy Furman Wood and her second husband, Horace M. Green. Josephine was raised in a big and loving family and was also preceded in death by her brothers, William, Wallace, Roy “Dude” and Joseph “Buzz”; and her sisters, Bonnie, Annie Dee, Winnie, and Katrina.

Surviving are her sons, John A. Wood, James L. Wood, and David O. Wood (Debra); grandchildren, Sarah Wood, Matthew Harrington, and Stephanie H. Fleming; great-grandchildren, Ella Coleman, Ben Fleming, and Little Matt. Also surviving is Jo’s twin sister, Thomasine P. Harkins; a sister-in-law, Jennie Paxton; and also Horace’s family whom Josephine was fond of.

Jo was a member of the 1948 graduating class of Canton High School. As a young lady she began her working career at Roses Dime Store, later Belk’s Department Store and American Enka Corporation. She was also an office assistant for the late Frank Pate, M.D. before her first marriage.

Josephine describes her life as marrying Billy Wood at a young age and raising her family in the Hominy community of Haywood County. She was a “city girl” that moved to the country, and she was in true bliss during those very happy years of her life. Josephine had written a book entitled “Memories from the Mountain” in which she shared many stories about her life during this time.

Following the death of her husband Billy in 1968, Josephine enrolled at Haywood Technical College and attained her LPN degree and was employed at Haywood County Hospital for 19 dedicated years as a full-time nurse, and later continued working part-time for nine years before her retirement at age 72.

Later, Jo’s life journey brought her 38 years of a wonderful marriage to her second husband, Horace M. Green, and they enjoyed traveling around the country and spending time at the beach in their camper. Josephine was an avid reader and she was always someone who was great to call and ask for advice. She often would offer things to consider but never tried to force her way of thinking on anyone. Always a caring loving mother, her passing will leave an empty place in our lives but wonderful warm memories shall remain forever.
