SAN ANTONIO, Florida — James R. “Papa” Stephens, 92, a Maggie Valley summer resident for the last 28 years, a winter home in San Antonio, Florida, passed away peacefully July 24, 2019, surrounded by his loving family and faithful companion Roxie The Counting Dog.

Papa Jim enjoyed the mountains of Maggie Valley, Snappy’s pizza, Jelley Belly’s and Pickin in the Park, with his longtime friend, Howard Trantham.

He served his country in WWII as an Army PFC and the Military Police, guarding General Eisenhower’s train.

After returning from his service overseas, Papa began his career as a union carpenter and spent 65 years working on and building many structures, also to include his mountain cabins in Maggie Valley of which he was so proud.

Papa entered his heavenly home just as he had lived his life, loving the Lord and spreading the joys of being a child of Christ. Forever in our hearts. We love you, Dad and Papa!
