A Tennessee woman was arrested in Canton after leading law enforcement on a chase that started in Buncombe County but ended in Haywood.

The chase began when Lelian Jane Smith, 54, of Knoxville, allegedly ran a stop sign in Buncombe County. When law enforcement there attempted to make a traffic stop, the minivan she was driving picked up speed while heading west.

However, once she came into Haywood, Sheriff’s deputies and Canton Police officers pursued her through downtown Canton toward Clyde, where she eventually crashed the minivan and was taken into custody.

Following the incident, Smith was charged with failing to heed a light or siren, reckless driving and felony possession of methamphetamine in Haywood County and reckless driving and fleeing to elude arrest in a motor vehicle in Buncombe County.

Smith was released from the Haywood County Detention Center on a written promise to appear.
