Haywood and surrounding counties are part of a winter storm watch where heavy mixed precipitation is possible, with between 6 and 10 inches of snow accumulating across the mountain valleys.

The National Weather Service predicts the storm could move in as early as Saturday afternoon with precipitation that will increase in coverage and intensity late Saturday with a change to snow in most places. Up to 1/4 inch of ice could accumulate.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible, the alert warns, and hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.

Widespread black ice should be expected Monday morning and could be a concern into the middle of the week. The storm alert lasts through Monday evening.
