FINAL WHISTLE — Those who want to share the historic moment of hearing the last mill whistle can gather in Sorrells Park in downtown Canton before noon Wednesday. Pictured is a prayer gathering held following the mill closure announcement in March.
CANTON — Noon Wednesday will mark a historic moment — and a low point — in Canton when the last mill whistle will sound in the community.
The whistle was installed in 1908 to signal mill workers, many of whom didn’t have clocks back then, that it was time to go to work, take a lunch break and go home.
