VOTER PHOTO ID REQUIRED —The Haywood County Board of Elections will hold two educational seminars about voter photo identification requirements June 17 — one in Canton and one in Waynesville.

Waynesville candidates running for mayor and the town board will make their case to voters during a public forum hosted by The Mountaineer at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at the historic courthouse in downtown Waynesville.

All five seats on the town board are up for election this fall, with six candidates running for alderman and two running for mayor. All will be in attendance at the forum.

The fast-paced forum will last around one hour. Candidates will share brief opening remarks introducing themselves and laying out their vision for Waynesville. They will then have 60 seconds to respond to a series of questions about pressing issues facing the town. Questions will not be revealed to candidates in advance.

The forum will be recorded and made available for viewing online.

The candidates running for four alderman seats are:

  • Alderman Jon Feichter
  • Alderwoman Julia Freeman
  • Alderman Leroy Roberson
  • Anthony Sutton
  • Joey Reece
  • Chuck Dickson

The candidates for mayor are:

  • Mayor Gavin Brown
  • Alderman Gary Caldwell

While every sitting town board member is running for re-election, there will be at least one new face on the board come December. By chosing to run for mayor, Alderman Gary Caldwell will give up his seat on the town board whether or not he wins the mayor race.

Members of the public are invited to submit questions for consideration by the end of the day Wednesday via email at news@themountaineer.com or calling Editor Vicki Hyatt at 828-452-0661.
