In 1910, Haywood County’s only school killing took place when a teacher shot one of his supervisors during a conference in Hemphill.

That teacher would escape the clutches of the law and dodge earthly justice for the charge, and the mystery of his disappearance would not be completely explained until 45 years after his death.
