Fran Nichols Rogers, who was shown in one of the photos published as part of The Mountaineer’s recent look at life in Haywood County in 1969, provided a bit of context to a photo where no names were originally available.
“It was my first year as a teacher in Haywood County-Crabtree-Iron Duff-Junaluska School,” Rogers wrote. “Ruth Noland was the principal of the combined schools. Junaluska School had burned the previous year and the students moved to the Crabtree-Iron Duff Campus. The first issue has this picture of me (Miss Nichols at the time) and my students Sherrill Wright, Cindy Ferguson, Pamela Norris Lovallo, Patti Messer Tucker, and part of Sherry White’s face. All these students were brilliant and creative, and I loved teaching them! We are making a filmstrip to show in an overhead projector. I’ll turn 75 in a couple of weeks, so this is really a throwback for me.”
