A huge outpouring of support has emerged across the county to pitch in however they could to the Night to Shine, a prom for exceptional individuals, a truly special experience.
Among them are the three stylists with Shear Attitudes salon in Waynesville, who are blocking off their schedules this Friday to offer free hairdos for those attending the event.
“We’ve been very blessed and we want to give back to our community,” said Rita Bolin, the owner of Shear Attitudes.
The Night to Shine will be held at the Canton Armory on Friday, Feb. 8, and is being sponsored by the town of Canton, Arc of Haywood County and Pinnacle Church in Canton.
The special needs attendees will arrive in limousines and walk a red carpet with a volunteer paparazzi cheering them on every step of the way. The prom itself features dinner and a DJ, and every guest is crowned either prom king or queen.
Hundreds answered the call for volunteers, with so many turning up to a volunteer interest meeting last weekend that event organizers had to put some volunteers on a waiting list.
While the Night to Shine will have pampering stations set up for the men to get shoe shines and ladies to get a touch up, the Shear Attitude stylists wanted to offer full hairstyles for attendees.
“You have these special kids who are beautiful on the outside and to help them feel that on the outside and have that confidence about themself is a wonderful thing,” Bolin said.
Plus, getting all fixed up for a special event is almost as fun as the event itself.
“Like Christmas or vacation, it’s the anticipation and getting ready that is what’s so exciting. It’s thrilling,” Bolin said.
Bolin said she also knows how expensive a prom dress and shoes can be, and some families wouldn’t have enough left over to afford a special hair style for the night.
Bolin and the other two Shear Attitudes stylists — Jennifer Singleton and Sherry Alvarez — are clearing their calendars Friday and asking their regular customers to move their appointments to another day.
Sheer Attitudes is located on South Main Street in Waynesville. Appointments will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. To reserve a free slot, call the salon at 828-456-4357.
