Hundreds gathered in downtown Canton to collectively witness and grieve the symbolic end of the paper mill's 115-year legacy: the last whistle.

The whistle went off at the stroke of noon, as has happened for more than a century, but this time it blew a full five minutes instead of the customary 30 seconds. The crowd fell silent, some lowered their hats, put their hands over their hearts, and many, of course, shed tears.
