A Jonathan Creek man has passed away after a head-on collision Saturday night.
Charles Alley, 84, was driving his 2014 Kia Rio northbound in the southbound lane of Jonathan Creek Road when his vehicle struck a Ford Explorer driven by Shelby Smith at about 8:20 p.m. near the Pride Resort. Sgt. Ray Blanton of the N.C. Highway Patrol said there is no suspicion that drugs or alcohol played a role and that Alley was pronounced dead at the scene.
Smith told The Mountaineer she was following her boyfriend’s vehicle, and although he managed to avoid the oncoming car, she hit it head-on.
“I don’t remember much, but just my car finally being set back down on the tires,” she said. “I tried to push the driver’s door open but I couldn’t, so I crawled across the seat and got out the passenger side door.”
She went to Alley’s vehicle and saw that he was deceased.
“I just seen his face and I couldn’t,” she said. “I just walked back to my car.”
Smith said she was transported to Mission Hospital’s trauma center with what was thought to be a broken ankle, but she was released after a series of tests determined she had no serious injuries.
