A Waynesville man has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty after allegedly shooting his dog with a BB gun.
Deven Eugene Boone, 49, was apprehended on Sept. 27, and charged with the single felony for the offense, which was alleged to have occurred that same day.
Court documents note that Boone did “maliciously torture an animal, a pitbull mix dog, owned by the defendant, by repeatedly shooting the dog with BB gun.”
Boone has been charged in the past with a number of misdemeanors, including trespassing, violating a domestic violence protective order, multiple counts of assault on a female, interfering with emergency communications, a marijuana charge and multiple DWIs.
While Waynesville Police Department was the charging agency, Animal Control Officer Erin Jennings noted that she was on-hand when Boone was arrested and that the dog was seized.
Jennings added that she didn’t observe any signs of physical injury to the dog and that the animal is being held at the Haywood County Animal Shelter as “evidence” pending the completion of the investigation. Due to that fact, it is not available for adoption.
Boone was issued a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 5.
