A Canton man is in jail after getting arrested on rape and strangulation charges.
Dakota Shane Surrett, 34, was formally indicted by a Haywood County Grand jury on the felony counts last month, which include rape and strangulation.
According to indictments, Surrett, engaged in sexual intercourse with the victim without consent and against her will. In addition, the warrant for arrest for the strangulation charge notes that Surrett allegedly “inflicted serious injury” on “a “juvenile under the age of 18” to the point that they were “unable to breathe and blacked out.”
The dates of offense ranged widely but went back to July of last year.
The official charges Surrett faces include two counts of second-degree forcible rape, one count of attempted second-degree forcible rape and assault by strangulation inflicting serious injury.
Surrett is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 30.
