Has the COVID surge peaked? There is a slight downward trend in COVID cases in Haywood and across North Carolina. While last week, every county in the state was in the red zone, now three have been upgraded to orange. The Haywood numbers reached the same level as in January, which were the highest marked during the pandemic, and the local hospital is postponing some elective surgeries to ensure there are beds for COVID patients. The Haywood County EMS is "stacking" calls, meaning ambulances are being dispatched on a priority level. When Haywood Regional Medical Center has been on "diversion," meaning EMS can't drop off patients there, Mission Hospital in Asheville is the destination, but on several occasions, Mission was on diversion, leaving EMS no place to transport patients.
