A fire broke out at Evergreen Packaging’s Canton paper mill Monday morning.
Canton fire chief Tim Carver said firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at about 10:15 a.m. While Carver didn’t have many specifics, he said he believed the investigation hadn’t yet begun. He did note they had a first-hand response and fought the blaze.
“As far as we know now there’s no injuries,” he said.
The fire comes barely more than six months after a fire claimed the lives of two contractors. Following a state investigation, it was determined that fire was not the fault of any paper mill employees.
Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers had praise for all of the agencies that responded.
“They responded in a heroic and timely manner,” he said. “Training and expertise no doubt took a potentially bad situation and curtailed it. I can’t speak highly enough about the men and women in all of the fire departments. No matter if it’s a house fire, a small business or the county’s biggest manufacturer, don’t doubt their ability to respond.”
