Two Kentucky residents were seriously injured in a motorcycle accident at 2:10 p.m. Friday at exit 103 on the U.S. 23/74 bypass near Lake Junaluska.

N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Mike Holcombe said Donald Kraft of Martin, Kentucky, was heading west from Lowe's to Lake Junaluska traveling in the left traffic lane.  When he switched lanes, he lost control of his motorcycle due to the uneven pavement where one lane is paved and the other isn't and hit the guardrail.

Both Kraft and his wife, Melinda, who was riding with him on the motorcycle, landed on the guardrail and appeared to have very serious injuries, Holcombe said.

Both were taken by ambulance to area beside the Nanci Weldon gym at Lake Junaluska where they were airlifted to Memorial Mission in Asheville.

Holcombe said there were no other factors contributing to the accident. When he checked on the couple's condition Saturday, he said both were still being treated.
