A Haywood County child under the age of 10 has tested positive for COVID-19.
The Haywood County Health Department was notified of the test result on Friday, May 29, said Haywood County Health Director Patrick Johnson.
"We fully expected this. It was a family transmission and both parents are healthcare workers," Johnson said. "They both were positive.
Johnson said the public needs to know that out of the 49 positive test results in Haywood, a child is now infected, that there are four cases in individuals under age 20, and three cases in persons over age 70.
"People need to know the range of ages this is hitting," Johnson said. "We're no longer saying people aren't taking this seriously. We're saying they aren't acting responsibly any more — not paying attention enough."
Johnson said the child is asymptomatic but noted the county had two hospitalizations, one admitted in Haywood and then transferred to Mission, and another who went straight to Mission.
“It’s vital that citizens assume the virus is circulating in the county and take appropriate precautions. You or the person near you in the grocery store could be unknowingly carrying the virus and spreading it throughout the community," Johnson said. "Basic steps like social distancing, wearing a mask, staying home if you are sick, and regular hand washing help to limit exposures and slow the spread.”
