A Canton man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
After allegedly murdering 48-year-old Regina Ray Hoglen at around 6:30 p.m. Sunday night in Asheville, Truitt Norman Nichols, 62, was arrested early this morning at his Canton home.
According to a press release sent out by the Asheville Police Department, officers responded to a call at 180 Azelea Road regarding a possible stabbing. By the time officers arrived, Hoglen was deceased.
“Witnesses provided information that allowed officers to quickly identify 62 year-old Truitt Norman Nichols as the suspect,” the release reads. “APD charged Nichols with first degree murder and he was brought into custody early this morning by Canton Police Department.”
Canton Police Chief Shawn Gaddis said his officers worked in conjunction with members of the Special Response Team from the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office to bring Nichols in without incident at his home at 50 North Main St.
“We actually located him there around midnight,” he said. “We arrested him at 4:55 a.m.”
The APD press release said that their initial investigation indicated that Nichols and Hoglen had been living together at 50 N. Main St. Gaddis said Canton Police haven’t had any issues with Nichols at that residence, but they are familiar with it.
“We’ve had a couple issues there at that house, but nothing with him,” he said.
