Bethel wood artist Dean Garnes is competing nationally in the FedEx Small Business Grant Contest.

The winning businesses will receive up to $50,000 to help start a small businesses that will increase its online footprint.

The contest started in mid-February and ends with the announcement of winners on April 29, 2019.

Garnes’ passion for woodworking led him to pursue a business that offers sustainable products used across multiple lifetimes. He plans to use his business as an opportunity to share his skills and knowledge in ways other woodworking shops might not.

Garnes said receiving the grant would be a game changer.

Dean and his wife, Lorelei, have spent the last 10 years saving funds to purchase the equipment needed to open a woodworking business. He owns a 1,200 square-foot workshop but needs high-end equipment to take this hobby to a business.

Backyard Wood Creations is pursuing the purchase of a CNC router costing $125,000. The CNC router will allow complicated parts to be cut in a short amount of time with high degree of precision and accuracy. The Garnes will pursue grants, contests and other resources before pursuing a business loan.

Backyard Wood Creations will offer custom CNC routing services to areas in Western North Carolina to fill a void in this market.

Currently, many businesses are outsourcing their projects due to lack of resources. Providing this service will shorten the supply chain, strengthen the community, and increase return on investment.

Many others have seen Dean’s capabilities and are actively challenging him to his endeavor of offering professional woodworking services.
