Meatball subs in Canton

CANTON — South Philly Italian Pastas serves a meatball sub so massive, owner Howard Knepper recommends eating it with a fork and knife.

“We have the pastas, the fettucine and the linguini, we have a signature meatball sub of the finest meatballs and sauces, and all that,” Knepper said. “It’s like a five-star sub shop that we don’t make anything here, but the food that’s sold out of here is with the highest quality of ingredients.”

The curbside eatery at 2690 Asheville Highway opened Tuesday, Feb. 4, cooking up its specialty meatball subs, cold cut subs, footlong hot dogs, pastas and more, said Knepper, who purchased the neighboring Days End Motel two years ago and recently decided to build the sub shop next door.

“I wanted to sell snowballs down here next to my motel, because it was hot down here one day,” Knepper said. “When the health department said that I couldn’t just sell snowballs without a health license, I told them, ‘well, I’m going to build me a building,’ and we did it.”

Knepper said he wants to provide high-quality food at low prices.

“It’s curbside service, it’s takeout only,” Knepper said. “Call in orders ahead, and we will deliver in certain areas.”

Knepper, of Miami, said he has been connected to Haywood County for more than 40 years, having spent several years of his childhood growing up in Waynesville.

“We’re trying to promote Canton a little bit, because Canton doesn’t get enough publicity,” Knepper said. “I believe that the growth is coming this direction, which will create more jobs and more businesses, it’s just a fantastic amount of traffic for any business that’s coming here.”

With Canton native Dottie Sluder as manager, Knepper said business has been good during the first few days for South Philly Italian Pastas, thanks to the high volume of traffic traveling Asheville Highway.

“This is a powerful road, alternate to I-40,” Knepper said. “I believe that Haywood County is one of the most beautiful counties in the whole world — forget the country — with its beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway, and all of its scenery.”
