Riley Howell

FORMER STUDENT — Former Haywood County resident Riley Howell, pictured here at his graduation from T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville in 2016, was one of two UNC-Charlotte students killed in a shooting on Tuesday night.

Riley Howell is coming home.

Those wishing to pay tribute to our local hero can do so today as his casket arrives at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville.

Howell was one of two students killed Tuesday at UNC-Charlotte when a lone gunman entered a classroom and started shooting. Rather than run and hide as an email sent out by the school urged, it was Howell who tackled the shooter, losing his life in the heroic act.

Howell's body will be escorted from Charlotte by Waynesville Police officers and Haywood County Sheriff’s deputies. The motorcade will travel up Russ Avenue to Walnut Street onto Main Street and to the funeral home.

Wells Greeley of Wells Funeral home encouraged people who want to give Howell a hero’s welcome to line the upper section of the route, beginning at Walnut Street, for the final two blocks of the route.

Those wishing to pay tribute can do so by arriving at Walnut Street at about 11 a.m. and can park at Wells Funeral Home, along Main St. or in the parking garage downtown.

Bring flags, signs or other tributes to pay honor to a hometown hero.
