COMMUNITY GARDEN — Pictured is the entrance to the Fruit of the Spirit community garden in Maggie Valley.

Maggie Valley Community Gardens will hold a yard sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 19, at the barn at the Maggie Valley United Methodist Church, 4192 Soco Road, Maggie Valley. All proceeds will be plowed back into the gardens.

Since 2014, MVCG has been growing and distributing nutritious fruit and vegetables to meet the needs of the food insecure in Haywood County.

Dedicated volunteers plant, tend, harvest and then deliver produce to organizations such as Meals on Wheels, McCracken Nursing Home, Haywood Pathways and to Maggie Valley United Methodist Church for its two food ministries.

Each year the group has improved yields with soil improvements, crop rotations, composting, plant selections and the extensive knowledge of dedicated volunteers.

In 2020, MVCG harvested 1,467 pounds of lettuce, beets, squash, zucchini, onions, cabbage, tomatoes, potatoes, corn, cucumbers, green beans and grapes.

The gardens are located on the grounds of First Baptist Church of Maggie Valley, Maggie Valley United Methodist Church, and land provided by the family of Ernestine Upchurch.

Those who have any gently used items they are willing to donate for the sale are asked to place them under the covered area at the barn by Thursday, June 17. For more information, contact Barb Planchock at 828-400-3144.
