Kids in the Creek is an annual program started by Haywood Waterways Association in 1999.
Every September, all eighth-grade Haywood County school students go on a field trip to learn about the water resources in Haywood County.
The students get to learn about watershed hydrology, water chemistry, collect fish, collect aquatic bugs and have a bunch of fun, said Christine O’Brien.
“We are looking for people to help out with this program. We could use people all day or half a day, especially Wednesday and Thursday,” she said. “No experience necessary. Please RSVP by Sept 5.”
The events will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 9 and from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Sept. 13.
The events will be held rain or shine at the Canton Recreation Park, (77 Penland St.). Meet at the last parking lot before the bridge by the baseball field.
Volunteers should bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, an old pair of shoes several sizes too big that can get wet and a change of clothing. There are also volunteer positions that don’t require getting wet.
Lunch, snacks, waders and fun will be provided.
