Every September, all 8th grade Haywood County school students go on a field trip to learn about the water resources in Haywood County. ‘Kids in the Creek’ is an annual program, started in 1999.
Students get to learn about watershed hydrology, water chemistry, collect fish, collect aquatic bugs, and have fun.
The Haywood Waterways Association is looking for people to help out with this program.
Organizers can use volunteers all day or half a day — especially Wednesday and Thursday. No experience is necessary. The events are held rain or shine.
Event dates and times are: from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Monday – Wednesday, Sept. 9 – 11; and from 8:30 – 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12.
Location for the event is Canton Recreation Park, (77 Penland St., Canton, NC 28716 — off U.S. 215); last parking lot before bridge near the baseball field.
Volunteers should bringsunscreen, hat, sunglasses, an old pair of shoes several sizes too big that can get wet, and a change of clothing in case they have too much fun.
There are also volunteer positions that will keep volunteers dry. Lunch, snacks, waders and fun will be provided.
Those interested are asked to RSVP by Sept. 5 to Christine at 828-476-4667, ext. 11, or email: Christine.firstname.lastname@example.org.
