Hundreds of peony lovers from far and wide will make a pilgrimage this month to visit Wildcat Ridge Farm along the banks of the Pigeon River in Panther Creek, but their quest is about so much more than finding the perfect cultivar.
Peonies transcend the generations, with tubers divided and passed down within a family for 200 years or more. For many, a treasure hunt through the Wildcat Ridge peony beds rekindles the nostalgia of grandmother’s garden.
“That’s the thing that is so wonderful about peonies,” said Suzanne Fernandez. “Every year we have daughters who bring their mothers and mothers who bring their children — because their mothers, their grandmothers and great-grandmothers all grew peonies.”
Suzanne and her husband, Ricardo Fernandez-Battini, have been amassing their peony collection for nearly 20 years. They inadvertently grew into the largest peony farm in the state, even though it’s not what they set out to do.
“We do it because we love it. And when you love it, it shows,” Ricardo said. “I believe that here is peony paradise.”
The farm will be open to the public during the month of May, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission os free and all peony lovers are invited to visit during the month long celebration and enjoy these blooming paradise.
