Go camping without leaving home this Memorial Day weekend with a virtual campout being hosted by 20 national park units across the South — including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway.
Virtual campout activities will be livestreamed on the Facebook sites of participating parks starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, through the following day, including games, songs, stories, folklore, cultural heritage, crafts and how-to videos.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is bravely hosting a segment called “Much Ado About Number Two: How to Poop in the Woods.”
Using a mini ranger doll as a guide, the video will explain how to dig a cat hole and how to leave no trace when you’ve got to go. Viewers can then join in a Cat Hole Relay game led by Leave No Trace Outdoors. The Parkway’s segment will be at 2 p.m Sunday, May 24, on their Facebook page.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park will host a segment at 11 a.m. Sunday on tips for enjoying the outdoors close to home, also on its Facebook page.
