EAST FLAT ROCK — Tuscola High School’s Air Force JROTC drill team participated in its first Drill and Ceremonies competition of the year at East Henderson High School’s “Strike Eagle.”
Once again, the unit took home the Third Place Overall trophy in the season opener meet. The “Strike Eagle” Drill meet is unique to itself as all competitors can only be first or second year cadets.
“Our upperclassmen training and mentorship played a big role in bringing home third place,” said Senior Master Sgt. Steve Robertson, assistant aerospace science instructor at Tuscola.
The school’s drill team commander, Cadet 2nd Lt. Melissa Dellinger, and her assistant, Cadet Senior Master Sgt. Joseph Miller, worked together in preparing the cadets to not just compete but place in the competition.
“It was an outstanding overall team performance. We are very proud of our first year cadets, especially in their first competition of the year,” said Robertson.
In order for the Tuscola JROTC to finish third overall, it required all teams in every event to do well. Overall, Tuscola placed third in Unarmed Flight and third in Inspection.
The Unarmed Flight team was commanded by Cadet 2nd Lt. Melissa Dellinger and the Unarmed Inspection team led was Cadet 2nd Lt. Amanda Ceron.
Tuscola’s next competition will be at the annual Rutherfordton-Spindale Marine Corps JROTC Academic and Drill competition in December.
