Undeterred by on-and-off rain, a determined band of eight people picked up 13 bags of litter from U.S. 276 South on Saturday, June 8. Among those who did show up were Waynesville Mayor Gavin Brown and Assistant Town Manager Amie Owens.
This hands-on litter pickup was part of the annual road cleanups performed by members of the environmental Board, the Commission For a Clean County (CCC).
The first one, scheduled on May 11 in Clyde, had to be cancelled due to a heavy downpour, lasting most of the day.
Volunteers are always welcomed. The remaining 9 a.m. Saturday morning pickups include:
• Canton, Aug. 10: Meet in the parking lot of the Canton Town Hall. This will be led by Jason Burrell and Nick Scheuer, Town Manager and Assistant Town Manager.
• Maggie Valley, Sept. 14: Meet in parking lot of the Maggie Valley Town Hall, led by Town Manager Nathan Clark.
• County Road, Oct. 5: Meet in parking lot of Jukebox Junction in Canton. Group leader will be Tommy Long, CCC Board member and County Commissioner.
Work does take place in light rain. Any volunteers willing to help, or anyone wishing further information, can call CCC Secretary JoAnna Swanson at 452-1550 or Chairman Bill Skelton at 456-3575.
