Haywood County Public Library programs for children

HCPL — Programs for children are offered to encourage reading.

A new Feeding Bodies, Feeding Minds initiative by Haywood County Public Library aims to increase children’s access to books, making them available at local drive-thru school feeding locations and food box giveaway sites this summer.

Books available for giveaway will be appropriate for babies and children up to age nine, with a variety of board books, picture books and chapter books.

The goal is to put books in children’s hands that will become part of their personal library and encourage, develop and support reading proficiency in Haywood County, through generous funding from Waynesville Kiwanis and Haywood County Library Foundation.

“The library’s goal is to work with established channels to distribute books to children and families,” Library Director Kathy Vossler said in a news release.

According to the National Assessment for Educational Progress, the more books students have access to in the home, the better they perform academically. And access to books in the home gives children a better chance at becoming successful, proficient readers.
