Last month, the WNC Communities’ WNC Beef Cattle Commission awarded the 2020 Happy Hollow Award to Howard Sorrells of Clyde.
Every year, the WNC Beef Cattle Commission awards the Happy Hollow Award to someone who has helped promote and support the beef industry.
Sorrells was awarded for his outstanding efforts to improve the production and quality of beef products and for the promotion of the beef industry.
Beverly Hargus, WNC BCC chairwoman, and Terri Wells, the director of Community and Agricultural Programs at WNC Communities, paid a porch visit to Sorrells and presented his Happy Hollow Award.
“Every year, the WNC Beef Cattle Commission awards the Happy Hollow Award to someone who has helped promote and support the beef industry,” said Hargus. “Mr. Sorrells grew up on a tobacco and cattle farm. After he and his wife Penny were married, they continued a farm together. For years Howard has been involved in the beef industry. He has helped with the Haywood County Cattlemen’s Association. He has served on the board of directors and has helped with special projects like the beef roasts. He has also served on the scholarship committees. Both Howard and Penny have been instrumental in raising money for many beef programs in Haywood County.”
Sorrells has also been a member of the WNC Beef Cattle Commission and has served on committees and as a past president.
“He is diligent to be present at the meetings. Anytime money is raised to help the youth at the Mountain State Fair Beef Shows, he is right there to help. Howard helps raise funds for these events but he also attends the events,” Hargus said.
Currently Sorrells serves on the State Board of Directors for the North Carolina Cattlemen’s Association, where he is one of three people representing Haywood County.
“One thing we realize is that Howard has a helpmate and that is his wife Penny. She is right beside him and helps him with all these events,” said Hargus.
“He is a giver and not a receiver,” Penny Sorrells said about her husband.
“On behalf of the WNC Beef Cattle Commission and all the producers in WNC we would like to thank Howard Sorrells for all his efforts in promoting our industry and helping all the children showing cattle in our area,” said Hargus. “So congratulations Howard Sorrells on being the 2020 Happy Hollow recipient.”
