The seventh annual Don Ledford Memorial Fundraiser will run from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Fines Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
The event will feature live gospel and bluegrass music, a cake walk, a 50-50 drawing and silent auction, as well as hamburger and hot dog plates.
Music this year will be provided by Cold Mountain Bluegrass, Hill Country and more.
Mike Freeman and Brenda Ferguson plan the event annually in honor of Ferguson’s brother, Don.
Ledford passed away in 2012, and Ferguson is committed to helping ensure that his musical legacy, as well as his love for helping children, carries on.
“He was so good to everybody, but he really loved the kids and this is how we’re helping keep his memory alive, by raising funds to help the kids,” Freeman said.
Ledford was a Vietnam veteran and an Evergreen Packaging retiree with 42 years of service.
“We want to thank everybody for helping us out,” said Ferguson. “All the businesses and volunteers have been so generous.”
All the proceeds from the fundraiser remain in the community and are used to help provide Christmas gifts for children and defray winter heating costs for needy families.
Now that the fundraiser has been going on for a few years, people tell them about families in the community who need help.
“It brings tears to your eyes to see some of the conditions people live in,” Freeman said. “We help kids and the elderly all over Haywood County, not just the Fines Creek community.”
