The Haywood County Recreation Program will be holding Fly Fishing Fridays from 10-11:30 a.m. on Aug. 9 and 16 at Lake Junaluska below the dam.
A special field trip on Aug. 10 to the West Fork of the Pigeon River will be held at the same time.
Participants will gain an understanding from the history of fly fishing, fly tying and learning to read the water.
Casting and practice casting will be taught at each class. Classes will be taught by Tommy Thomas, President of Cataloochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited and owner of Thomas Custom Rods.
Thomas is a fly rod making instructor at Haywood Community College and has fished in every state on the east coast.
“I have loved the sport of fly fishing from the age of a very young kid,” Thomas said. “I now have 30 years of experience in it. I want my students to come out of class able to perform as well or better than me.”
The class is free but is limited to the first 20 participants. Loaner rods will be available as well. To register for the class, call Ian Smith at 452-6789 or email: email@example.com.
