Ennis Marcus, a sixth-grader at Waynesville Middle School, won second place in the NC Division of Soil and Water Conservation’s state essay contest.

This year’s contest theme was “We All Live in a Watershed.” Marcus’ essay won the district contest and the Area 1 (16 westernmost counties) contest before moving onto the state contest.

She was the only participant from Area 1 to win at a state-level contest. The NC Division of Soil and Water Conservation sponsors several contests each year for students in grades three through nine.
