CENTENARIAN — Imogene Downs Messer turned 100 on Oct. 9 and celebrated with friends and family.

Imogene Downs Messer, born on Oct. 9, 1920 celebrated her 100th birthday at 6 p.m. on Oct. 9, 2020 with family and friend Dorothy Morrow at the home of her son, Harold Dean Messer.

Family members there to celebrate with her were her children (Harold Messer and Mary Lou Mehaffey (Walter); grandchildren, Erin Long (Brendan), Sean Mehaffey (Ivy), and Kevin Messer (Rhonda); great grandchildren, Sarah Stepp (Josh), Emily Jenkins (Aaron), Aiden & Ashlynn Mehaffey and Cassidy & Finnegan Long; great great grandchildren, Cooper Stepp and Anna Grace Jenkins.

The celebration was committed to memories by Lauren Willett Photography. Mrs. Messer was born in the Ironduff Community of Haywood County. She is the daughter of James Elverson Downs and Daisy Green Downs. Imogene is a proud Haywood County resident where she has lived her entire life. She purchased her current home in 1963 where she lived independently until just a few months ago when a fall resulted in hospitalization.

Upon discharge, her children decided that the best decision for her was to stay at HD’s home. She still plans to return to her house to be the strong, independent woman she has been her entire life as a proud Haywood County native.
