H1N1 hits Haywood schools |

Three students enrolled in Haywood County Schools have tested positive for H1N1 flu virus, the Haywood County Health Department announced Friday. Health Director Carmine Rocco said he was notified late Thursday afternoon that students at Hazelwood Elementary School and Pisgah High School had tested positive for H1N1. A Tuscola High School student also tested positive for H1N1, but was sick before the school year began. |

In a Monday hour-long interview, U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler discussed a healthcare proposal he and others are advocating that would use a nonprofit system to provide competition for insurance companies. He also touched on the war on terror (necessary), his living arrangements in Washington, D.C. that made news after a visit by S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford (blown out of proportion), Social Security reform (do it without unduly stressing seniors) and a pending vote to raise the nation's debt limit beyond the present cap of $12.104 trillion (undecided). Superior Court Judge Nathaniel Poovey ruled Monday the murder case against Edwardo Wong III, who is accused of killing N.C. Trooper Shawn Blanton in Haywood County in June 2008, will be tried in Catawba County.

Following repairs, swimmers return to Canton pool |

After a brief delay and lots of repairs, the Canton pool has opened for swimmers. The pool, located next to the town’s recreation park on the Pigeon River, offers the young and old both a place to cool off on a hot summer day. It re-opened June 15, the Monday after school let out for summer.
