Police identify body found in Fines Creek
A 27-year-old Clyde man is being charged with murder in the slaying of a body found Monday in the Fines Creek area off Panther Town Road.
Matthew Robert Caldwell was taken into custody Wednesday morning, confined to the Haywood County Jail under $250,000 bond and is accused of murdering Jesse Lee Parker, 44, also of Clyde.

As winter draws closer, the need for heating assistance continues to grow.
To help those in need, a campaign was started last year to raise money to assist people with winter heating costs. That campaign — Share the Warmth — successfully raised more than $35,000 last year. That was in addition to $565,000 Mountain Projects spent for weatherization last year.

N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue has said she will block the release of Willard Warren and 19 other inmates set to be freed later this week by asking a judge to review “good behavior credits” Warren and the other inmates earned during their time in prison.

A rock slide that included three boulders, each the size of a small garage, has closed both east and westbound lanes of Interstate 40 nearly three miles inside the Haywood County line.
