Historical Society to meet Jan. 11
The Historical Society of Haywood County will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11 in the auditorium of the Waynesville branch of the Haywood County Library.
Roy Moody of Waynesville will review “The Cold Mountain Bomber Crash: Enduring Legacy,” written by Bethel native Doris Rollins Cannon. Cannon received an award in October 2006 from the N.C. Society of Historians for her book.
The book is based on a 1946 B-25 bomber piloted by Major General Paul B. Wurtsmith which crashed into the cliffs of Cold Mountain. Four other crewmen and Wurtsmith were killed instantly on the plane en route from Michigan to Tampa, Fla.
Moody was 9 at the time of the crash and assisted Cannon with research for her book. There will be a short business meeting for the installation of officers for 2007. The meeting is open to the public.
The Historical Society of Haywood County meets bi-monthly on the third Thursday of each month. This month’s meeting is being held a week earlier to accommodate Moody’s schedule.
The group is actively involved in helping gather information for a coffee table book being printed for the county’s bicentennial celebration in 2008.
Bette Sprecher, a past president of the organization, said there will be plenty of opportunities for those who enjoy history to become involved as the county prepares for the 2008 celebration.
