The Appalachian Dance and Music Preservation Society will sponsor free clogging lessons starting Jan. 6 and running every Saturday through Feb. 24, weather permitting, at Beaverdam Community Center on North Canton Road. Classes for kindergartners to fifth-graders will be from 10 to 11 a.m., and adult classes will begin at 11 a.m. to noon.
The clogging class, which first started about five years ago at Haywood Community College, but moved into the Beaverdam Community Center last year for more space, has always been free, said Billie Scruggs, instructor for the class.
“We do this every January and February,” said Scruggs. “It’s a way to keep our tradition going, and it’s a great way to work with the children.”
Children who clog, said Scruggs, often do better in school and are more likely to succeed. “The kids who clog don’t mind getting up in front of a crowd. It gives them confidence in themselves,” said Scruggs.
Those who would like to participate, but do not fall in the K-5 or adult category, will be put into a class, according to their age. “The doors are open to everyone,” Scruggs said.
